久しぶりにイエスの「海洋地形学の物語」を聴いた。
リリース当初から賛否両論の大作だけれど、初めて耳にした30年前から僕の評価はひとつ、それも揺るがない。すなわち、ジョン・アンダーソンとスティーブ・ハウの作詞作曲能力が最高の形で結実し、しかもイエスというバンドのアレンジ能力のこれまた完璧さがまざまざと示された傑作だと。
ただし、1曲20分前後の作品を4つ並べるという、マーラーやブルックナー以上の長尺志向は聴く側の緊張感を萎えさせるのは確か。「よし聴くぞ」という気合いと根気と・・・（笑）。
それに、そもそもジョン・アンダーソンが1973年の来日ツアー中にホテルで読んだパラマハンサ・ヨガナンダが著した「あるヨギの自叙伝」にインスパイアされて書かれたというのだから、歌詞の難解さは前作「危機（Close To The Edge）」以上。よって翻訳などもってのほか、歌詞を見て「感じること」が重要。

第1曲「神の啓示」（The Revealing Science of God – Dance of the Dawn）

What happened to this song we once knew so well

後半の、いわばサビの部分であるこのあたりの歌詞が「気になる」。うーん、しかしながら、どう解釈すれば良いのか・・・。
第2曲「追憶」（The Remembering – High the Memory）
第2曲についても次のあたりの歌詞。
Relayer, all the dying cried before you
Relayer, we’ve rejoiced in all their meaning
Relayer, we advance we retrace our stories
Relayer, all the passion spent on one cross
Relayer, sail the futile wars they suffer
Relayer, we advance we retrace our story, fail safe now
「輪廻転生」がベースにあるよう。生も死も表裏一体、過去から現在、そして未来へと我々はひとつでつながっているということを言いたいのか。
そのことは最後の部分をみても同様。
Rainbows, soft light, alternate view
Sunlight, tell me someone alternate view
Alternate view, surely, surely
2枚目に移る。
第3曲「古代文明」（The Ancient – Giants Under the Sun）
後半のスティーブのアコースティック・プレイに涙する。
And I heard a million voices singing
Acting to the story that they had heard about
Does one child know the secret and can say it
Or does it all come out along without you
Along without you
我々人間はどこから来て、どこへ去ってゆくのか？生まれたばかりの乳児は、そして2，3歳の幼子は過去世の記憶を持っているらしい。
第4曲「儀式」（Ritual – Nous sommes du soleil）
Nous sommes du soleil we love when we play
Open doors we find our way
We look we see we smile
Surely daybreaks cross our path
And stay maybe a while
扉を開けると「道」が見つかるのだと。夜明けはもうすぐ目の前だ。
意識して見れば、自ずと見える、そして微笑むことだと。
ふぅ・・・。
2012年12月に真に相応しいアルバム。
